Oral Magnesium for Muscle or Leg Cramps?

german translation / full article

Question

Does it make sense to offer oral magnesium to patients who suffer from idiopathic muscle or leg cramps?

Answer

Effectiveness of oral magnesium in the treatment of idiopathic muscle or leg cramps has not been proven by the available scientific evidence. However, because of the good safety profile and in the absence of other efficient drug treatment an attempt with magnesium can be made. For patients with acute idiopathic muscle or leg cramps muscle stretching should be tried first, i.e. standing up and stretching the leg or pressing it against the edge of the bed.
