An International Comparison of Family Practice Research Output

Summary: Compared to other developed countries, German primary care research output is still small. In a historical perspective, however, considerable progress has been made. About a dozen academic centres publishes internationally competitive work. Compared to other medical disciplines primary care research is still underfunded. There are several barriers to overcome if further progress is to be made regarding capacity development and publication strategies. Academic departments of primary care in Germany have their strengths in health services and clinical research. They are becoming an attractive partner in cooperative research with classical clinical disciplines. This will help develop a national primary care research network with its own research agenda and methodological groundwork.
