Introduction: In February 2013 the German Federal Statistical Office issued a press release stating that cancer is an increasing cause of death in Germany. This statement will be tested in this article. Important terms are explained.

Method: Data on causes of death, cancer mortality and cancer incidence in Germany were researched online at the databases of DeStatis, the Information System of the Federal Health Monitoring and the Robert Koch Institute.

Results: Despite a small increase in cancer incidence between 2000 and 2010 of 4,3 % cancer mortality has fallen by 23 % between 1980 and 2012.

Conclusion: The press release of the Statistical Office warrants clarification.
