Clerkship in Family Medicine: Family Practitioners’ Perception of Learning Contents

Results of a Survey

Background: The clerkship in primary care is supposed to arouse medical students´ interest and to motivate them to work as a family practitioner (FP) later on. However, regarding learning contents there are no guidelines or a given curriculum from the faculties. Thus, the goal of this survey was to find out which learning contents were considered necessary by the FP`s.

Methods: 50 % (n = 2087, random sample) of the FP‘s in Lower Saxony and the teaching practices (n = 241) of the institute were sent a questionnaire which included i.a. questions about „clerkship in primary care: learning contents“. On a Likert scale from 1 = not necessary to 5 = absolutely necessary the assessment of different contents, e.g. „FP`s basic skills“ was rated. The answers 4 and 5 were added up and summarized as „necessary“ for each item.

Results: The overall response rate was 27 % (672/2087). Most of the FP`s (69 %) already gained experiences with students in their practices. As most important learning contents (for more than 90 % of the participants) the following items were stated: history taking, physical examination and comprehensive view of the psychosocial/medical situation. On the other hand, taking blood, ECG knowledge, geriatric assessment, taking care of fringe groups, DMP-programs, guide lined therapy and practice management were considered less relevant.

Conclusions: From the FP‘s view, relevant learning contents of a clerkship in primary care mainly consist in „classical“ doctors‘ competencies like history taking, physical examination and knowing the patient‘s psychosocial and medical state.
