The Evaluation of Psychometric Properties of the German Version MAAS-Global

Background: Structured training of communication competencies on the basis of the Maastricht history taking and advice scoring list (MAAS-Global) in medical education has been well established in the Netherlands for more than 20 years. However, whether the communication aspects of the German version of the MAAS-Global (MAAS-Global-D) are comparable to the original one has yet to be established. Therefore the aim of this study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the MAAS-Global-D for a selected area.Methods: For this study, communication competencies of medical students were trained in an elective course entitled “consultation competencies and manual diagnostics“ using four simulation cases. Consultations were recorded and the videos were rated by two independent trained raters using the MAAS-Global-D instrument. The inter-rater reliability was defined. In order to evaluate the psychometric properties an explorative factor analysis was performed and the internal consistency was calculated.Results: Video material from 37 out of 50 students was available and analyzed. The inter-rater reliability was calculated with 0.863. The factor analysis established two independent factors: the internal consistency for the factor “organisational aspects“ was α = 0.911 and for “patient related aspects“α = 0.781.Conclusions: The eleven items which rank among the communication aspects of the MAAS-Global in the German version shows good to very good psychometric properties. The MAAS-Global-D, in particular the eleven items, seem appropriate to be used to train communication competencies in medical education in Germany.
