Summary: The claim for compulsory vaccinations seems an answer regularly given at every outbreak of vaccine-preventable diseases not only in Germany. This paper discusses whether or not the positive effects of compulsory vaccinations are overestimated, juridical and epidemiological framework requirements for the introduction of mandatory vaccinations in Germany exist at all and whether the fear, compulsory vaccinations could in the end diminish the acceptance of vaccinations in the population, is justified.
