Summary: There is a necessity of family medicine within the health care system in spite and because of the simultaneous necessity of specialisation in medicine. This is demonstrated on the basis of the core values of family medicine and not primarily on its cost-effectiveness. Until today, these essential arguments have inadequately reached the profession and the public. Moreover the political and professional consequences of the preservation of family medicine have not been realized.
