E-Cigarettes for Smoking Cessation: Harm or Benefit?

german translation / full article

Nik Koneczny, Andreas Sönnichsen

Question

Smokers frequently seek their doctors´ advice whether or not they should switch to electronic cigarettes. Is there any evidence regarding the potential harm of these devices? Can they support smoking-cessation?

Answer

Data are not yet sufficient to reveal strong evidence. Potential harm can be expected from e-cigarettes as well if consumed regularly for a long period of time, but it seems to be much smaller than the harm caused by conventional cigarette-smoking. Preliminary results of studies point at a possible benefit of e-cigarettes for smoking-cessation.
