What is the indication for thyroidectomy in patients with a nontoxic goiter?

Asymptomatic euthyroid patients with benign goiters ( 80 ml) should be monitored by ultrasound and in relation to their thyroid function. For patients with a very large goiter ( 80–100 ml), or a goiter that continues to grow, an active treatment (like surgery or radioiodine-treatment) should be considered. Surgery is preferred to radioiodine-therapy for patients with very large goiter or if obstructive symptoms or nodules 1,5 cm are present.
