Addictiveness of Codeine

german translation / full article

Simon Kostner

The combination of paracetamol and codeine is part of the WHO-scheme for the treatment of pain. How often leads the application of this combination to drug dependency?

Codeine, metabolized in the liver to morphine, can – as any other opioid – result in drug dependency which seems to be a risk only or mainly in persons having a history of some drug abuse. Short term use of a few days till 3 weeks or regular use for only 1 to 4 days (as in migraine) seem to be unproblematic. In long-term use patients should not get it if a “drug-dependency” is present in their medical history.
