Summary: To date, the management of primary care patients with neck pain mostly builds on the assumption of a monocausal pathophysiology. Since most of the common therapeutical approaches suffer from a weak evidence base, no German guidelines on neck pain have been available as yet. According to its concept of development, distribution, and implementation of evidence-based guidelines for family medicine, the German College of General Practitioners and Family Physicians (DEGAM) developed a new guideline in order to improve the health care of patients with neck pain in a primary care setting. The DEGAM-guideline method consists of ten steps. Here, we present the main recommendations of the new guideline.
