Summary: Age-related macular degeneration is the most common cause of visual loss and blindness in Germany. Main risk factors are advanced age, smoking, and family history. The non-exsudative is distinguished from the exsudative type. The loss of vision characteristic of non-exsudative macular degeneration progresses slowly. Therapeutic options are not convincing at the moment. Exsudative macular degeneration is treatable by vascular endothelial growth factor inhibitors, which must be injected into the vitreous cavity. Different drugs are available; main drawbacks are their expense and the injections’ frequency.
