Abstract: In Germany post-mortem examinations have to be carried out by every physician. The physician also has to fill out the death certificate. To do this, no further training is necessary or required. This leads to uncertainness and mistakes. In this article relevant laws and regulations as well as the procedure of a post-mortem examination are explained. Typical post-mortem findings and their importance are shown. Common mistakes are exemplified.
