Summary: After many years of political discussion and technical development, this year a system for quality improvement in Swedish primary healthcare goes into routine operation. The aim of this system is to measure the quality of care at all primary healthcare centers through approximately 80 automatically collected indicators. Thereby it intends to stimulate systematic quality improvement at primary healthcare centers and regional and national learning processes. At the same time, the system allows the transfer of data into other quality registers and research using high-quality routine data. This article explains the structure of this system and its development history.
