Summary: Bariatric surgery has substantially developed over the course of the last 10 years and has thus become the most effective way to ensure weight loss and to prevent and treat comorbidities in obese patients. There are a number of surgical methods which can be chosen for each patient individually. A number of studies have examined bariatric surgery’s advantages as well as its risks and unwanted side effects. However, its benefits considerably outweigh its risks, if indications and contraindications are correctly observed.
