Keywords: Academic Institutions of Family Medicine Clinical Patient Care

Summary: Only five of 36 academic institutions of family medicine at German medical schools indicate to practice clinical patient care. To gather more detailed informations those five institutions were approached and data documented and analysed. The institutions´ answers show that clinical care can be realized e.g. within the central emergency department and/or ambulatory, multidisciplinary group practices. Plans for enlarging their respective involvement have been voiced by the family medicine departments in Hamburg, Hannover and Erlangen The author advocates that family medicine departments at universities not only pursue teaching and research but also patient care. A change of frame conditions in the health care system seems to be a basic requirement for this development.
