Summary: This paper deals with the diagnostic procedures as to the unspecific symptom “leg edema” in family practice. It describes the process of ruling out high risk situations, and a possible pathway of essential diagnostic steps, integrating typical situations in family practice (like.g. multi- and comorbidities). I briefly discuss first line therapy in an emergency and more general measures in primary care. However, neither specific treatment of underlying causes nor edema during pregnancy are considered in this article (in the latter case work up follows different pathways).
