Summary: An updated version of the German National Diabetes Guideline (NVL) “Prevention and Treatment of Retinal Complications” was published in 2015. The recommendations in this guideline also apply to patients with type 1 diabetes. New additions to the guideline are forms of therapy using intravitreal growth factors and an extension of the inspection intervals in patients without any major risk. The updated guideline discusses deficiencies in data quality more frankly than the first edition. For instance, both insufficient knowledge concerning epidemiology as well as the benefit, generally overestimated so far, of antihyperglycemic therapies are discussed. This guideline demands internal medical cooperation and communication more urgently than its predecessor.
