Burning Mouth Syndrome

german translation / full article

Bozen, Anna Vögele

How can a burning mouth syndrome/glossodynia be treated when the tongue shows no changes and no cause can be identified?

Burning mouth syndrome probably is a somatoform pain syndrome and can be treated by cognitive behaviour therapy, antidepressants (SSRI and Amisulpirid) and by sucking (not swallowing) benzodiazepines. The last cannot generally be suggested because of possible absorption of larger quantities and resulting side effects.
